Did Your Relative Assign their Land Warrant?

[originally posted on our old blog in 2015]

We often use names of associates for clues, but sometimes associates may not be as closely associated with our relatives as we would like.

I came across this advertisement in the 1856 Abbeville Banner while searching for something else and it got me to thinking about those land warrants I have that a relative assigned to someone instead of patenting the property themselves.

In a few cases, the person to whom they assigned the property was clearly a relative. In other cases the assignment was not made to a known associate.

Now maybe I should search newspapers to see if the person to whom my relative assigned a bounty land warrant advertised that they were willing to purchase such warrants. Sites such as  GenealogyBank and the Chronicling America collection may digital images of newspapers that have ads of this type.
