There are ways to discover if what you \u201cheard\u201d (and that\u2019s questionable) is true or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So don\u2019t say \u201cI heard the Hamilton County, Ohio courthouse burned\u201d and then state a year. Find out from a reputable online source first before you share any such comments or \u201cfacts.\u201d And then, include that source in your reference to the fat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t say \u201cI heard the birth certificates for Dawson County, Nebraska, start in xxx year\u201d without checking first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I started research over 40 years ago, the ability to quickly confirm basic facts was not nearly as easy as it is today\u2026particularly if a library with a significant reference collection was not nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHearing\u201d is different from \u201cknowing.\u201d Even if you know, it doesn\u2019t hurt to perform a quick check to make certain your knowledge is correct. Memories can be incorrect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s time to stop sharing facts you &#8216;\u201cheard\u201d and start sharing facts you can back up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s a difference between saying &#8220;I heard my Grandma had a baby with the neighbor and I heard the county charges $16.00 for a death certificate.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Damn it people.
