{"id":122,"date":"2015-06-09T16:35:27","date_gmt":"2015-06-09T16:35:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/?p=122"},"modified":"2015-06-09T16:35:27","modified_gmt":"2015-06-09T16:35:27","slug":"huls-huels-or-huls-which-is-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/?p=122","title":{"rendered":"Huls, Huels, or H\u00fcls&#8211;Which Is It?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jim Biedler gently asked me about the spelling of &#8220;Huls&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/?p=113\">in my previous post<\/a>\u00a0on an<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-124\" src=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/umlauts-300x233.jpg\" alt=\"umlauts\" width=\"300\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/umlauts-300x233.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/umlauts.jpg 386w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/> 1891 marriage record involving a bride and groom who shared the same last name both\u00a0<em>before<\/em> and <em>after<\/em> their marriage.\u00a0\u00a0In my original posting, the spelling &#8220;Huls&#8221; was used throughout the post.\u00a0There was a problem with that.<\/p>\n<p>The marriage record did not say &#8220;Huls.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It said &#8220;H\u00fcls&#8221; or, appropriately transcribed without the umlaut, &#8220;Huels.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In some written records on this family early in their time in the United States, the non-umlaut version of &#8220;Huels&#8221; is used. However at some point in time this family dropped the &#8220;e&#8221; and the umlaut and simply went with Huls and the vast majority of records on this family in the United States use that spelling. For that reason, I&#8217;ve standardized the spelling to Huls when writing about the family or commenting on a record and interpreting it.<\/p>\n<p>However document transcription requires a greater attention to detail and an eye for transcribing the document how it is written.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not certain what the BCG <i><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1Ml8Hes\">Standards Manual<\/a><\/i> has to say about transcribing documents with diacritics, but I&#8217;m reasonably certain the intent of transcription is to render the document faithfully. That&#8217;s probably stated explicitly or implied somewhere in the\u00a0<i><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1Ml8Hes\">Standards Manual<\/a>.\u00a0<\/i>I&#8217;m fairly certain that <em><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1Ml8Hes\">Evidence Explained<\/a><\/em> suggests that transcriptions be done faithfully to the original as well.<\/p>\n<p>The transcription of a document is different from a discussion of a family and writing about conclusions regarding various family members. In those writings I&#8217;ll use the spelling of &#8220;Huls&#8221; as that&#8217;s what the family used.<\/p>\n<p>Jim Biedler&#8217;s book on German research (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1Ml5LyD\">The Family Tree German Genealogy Guide<\/a>)\u00a0<\/em>is one that I have on my shelf.
