They would be mistaken. There are<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dpbolvw.net\/click-865524-10470501-1404254934000?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ancestry.com%2Fcgi-bin%2Fsse.dll%3Fdb%3Dssdi%26gss%3Dsfs28_ms_r_db%26new%3D1%26rank%3D1%26gsln%3Dsmith%26gsln_x%3D0%26msddm%3D11%26msddm_x%3D1%26msddy%3D2014%26msddy_x%3D1%26MSAV%3D1%26uidh%3Dko5\"> no Smiths in the database for October of 2014<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dpbolvw.net\/click-865524-10470501-1404254934000?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ancestry.com%2Fcgi-bin%2Fsse.dll%3Fdb%3Dssdi%26gss%3Dsfs28_ms_r_db%26new%3D1%26rank%3D1%26gsln%3Dsmith%26gsln_x%3D0%26msddm%3D11%26msddm_x%3D1%26msddy%3D2014%26msddy_x%3D1%26MSAV%3D1%26uidh%3Dko5\">check for yourself<\/a>). It&#8217;s not because no Smiths died in the United States during that month. It&#8217;s not because\u00a0<em>Ancestry.com<\/em> made a mistake. It&#8217;s because Congressional legislation passed in late 2013 impacted when information in the &#8220;Death Master File&#8221; could be released to the public. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/113\/plaws\/publ67\/PLAW-113publ67.pdf\">Public Law 113-67, passed on 26 December 2013<\/a>, which went into effective three months after its passage set the timeline for which information from the file could be released to the public.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1544\" src=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/ssdi-no-smiths.jpg\" alt=\"ssdi-no-smiths\" width=\"737\" height=\"329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/ssdi-no-smiths.jpg 737w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/ssdi-no-smiths-300x134.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 737px) 100vw, 737px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Because of this, one will <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kqzyfj.com\/click-865524-10470501-1404254934000?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ancestry.com%2Fcgi-bin%2Fsse.dll%3Fdb%3Dssdi%26gss%3Dsfs28_ms_r_db%26new%3D1%26rank%3D1%26gsln%3Dsmith%26gsln_x%3D0%26msddm%3D1%26msddm_x%3D1%26msddy%3D2014%26msddy_x%3D1%26MSAV%3D1%26uidh%3Dko5\">find Smith deaths from January of 2014<\/a> in the index. It is all about the timing.<\/p>\n<p>It never hurts to read the fine print. Titles can be misleading. The date legislation is passed is not usually the date on which it is effective.<\/p>\n<p>And when a database covering the entire United States has no Smith deaths for an entire month, your genealogical radar should indicate that there&#8217;s something not quite right.<\/p>\n<p>Just don&#8217;t always assume that\u00a0<em>Ancestry.com\u00a0<\/em>is always at fault&#8212;they aren&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/ssdi-no-smiths.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The devil may not be in the Social Security Death Index, but he certainly is in the details of searching it.
