Coins are one of those things that are on that list.<\/p>\n<p>I discovered the &#8220;Troutfetter coins&#8221; on <a href=\"http:\/\/rover.ebay.com\/rover\/1\/711-53200-19255-0\/1?icep_ff3=9&amp;pub=5575075447&amp;toolid=10001&amp;campid=5337446131&amp;customid=&amp;icep_uq=genealogy+postcards&amp;icep_sellerId=&amp;icep_ex_kw=&amp;icep_sortBy=12&amp;icep_catId=&amp;icep_minPrice=&amp;icep_maxPrice=&amp;ipn=psmain&amp;icep_vectorid=229466&amp;kwid=902099&amp;mtid=824&amp;kw=lg\" target=\"_self\">Ebay<\/a>\u00a0a few years ago while hoping to find something on the elusive Philip Troutfetter<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"text-decoration: none; border: 0; padding: 0; margin: 0;\" src=\"http:\/\/rover.ebay.com\/roverimp\/1\/711-53200-19255-0\/1?ff3=9&amp;pub=5575075447&amp;toolid=10001&amp;campid=5337446131&amp;customid=&amp;uq=genealogy+postcards&amp;mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]\" alt=\"\" \/>. Instead of a picture of Philip I found a coin from his brother&#8217;s general store in Colby, Kansas.\u00a0\u00a0I gave into temptation and purchased this &#8220;50 cent&#8221; piece from the Boerner and Troutfetter store in Colby, Kansas, from an <a href=\"http:\/\/rover.ebay.com\/rover\/1\/711-53200-19255-0\/1?icep_ff3=9&amp;pub=5575075447&amp;toolid=10001&amp;campid=5337446131&amp;customid=&amp;icep_uq=genealogy+postcards&amp;icep_sellerId=&amp;icep_ex_kw=&amp;icep_sortBy=12&amp;icep_catId=&amp;icep_minPrice=&amp;icep_maxPrice=&amp;ipn=psmain&amp;icep_vectorid=229466&amp;kwid=902099&amp;mtid=824&amp;kw=lg\" target=\"_self\">Ebay<\/a>\u00a0seller (it&#8217;s now the second one I have in my collection).<\/p>\n<p>The coin doesn&#8217;t have a date on it, but Troutfetter was involved in the general mercantile business in Colby, Kansas, in the early part of the 20th century. This\u00a0George Troutfetter (there are numerous others) was born in the early 1870s in Hancock County, Illinois, \u00a0the\u00a0son of Christian Troutfetter. His brother was Philip Troutfetter who was a newspaperman in Colby, Kansas, an entrepreneur and ladies&#8217; man in Colorado, an apparent adventurer in Columbia, South America, and a waiter in Boston.<\/p>\n<p>The Troutfetter store also had a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rover.ebay.com\/rover\/1\/711-53200-19255-0\/1?ff3=4&amp;pub=5575075447&amp;toolid=10001&amp;campid=5337446131&amp;customid=&amp;mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fitm%2FBOEFNER-TROUTFETTER-Token-COLBY-KANSAS-GOOD-FOR-25-CENT-IN-TRADE-28MM-UNCIR-%2F201476851491%3Fhash%3Ditem2ee8f4c723%3Ag%3A-cQAAOSwHjNV7cwH\" target=\"_self\">25 cent <\/a>piece as well, but I decided another 50 cents in Troutfetter money was enough.\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"text-decoration: none; border: 0; padding: 0; margin: 0;\" src=\"http:\/\/rover.ebay.com\/roverimp\/1\/711-53200-19255-0\/1?ff3=4&amp;pub=5575075447&amp;toolid=10001&amp;campid=5337446131&amp;customid=&amp;mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not just paper items one finds on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rover.ebay.com\/rover\/1\/711-53200-19255-0\/1?icep_ff3=9&amp;pub=5575075447&amp;toolid=10001&amp;campid=5337446131&amp;customid=&amp;icep_uq=genealogy+postcards&amp;icep_sellerId=&amp;icep_ex_kw=&amp;icep_sortBy=12&amp;icep_catId=&amp;icep_minPrice=&amp;icep_maxPrice=&amp;ipn=psmain&amp;icep_vectorid=229466&amp;kwid=902099&amp;mtid=824&amp;kw=lg\" target=\"_self\">Ebay<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Members of the far-flung Trautvetter\/Troutfetter family have been known to make many things.
