I&#8217;m not going to be spending them anytime soon and they certainly fit in any vending machines.<br \/>\nThe coin was part of an apparent marketing promotion for the Boerner &amp; Troutfetter store in Colby, Kansas. The store was in operation for part of the first half of the 20th century. It&#8217;s in good condition, but whether it&#8217;s actually worth fifty cents is another matter entirely. The purchase price on\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rover.ebay.com\/rover\/1\/711-53200-19255-0\/1?icep_ff3=9&amp;pub=5575075447&amp;toolid=10001&amp;campid=5337446131&amp;customid=&amp;icep_uq=genealogy+postcards&amp;icep_sellerId=&amp;icep_ex_kw=&amp;icep_sortBy=12&amp;icep_catId=&amp;icep_minPrice=&amp;icep_maxPrice=&amp;ipn=psmain&amp;icep_vectorid=229466&amp;kwid=902099&amp;mtid=824&amp;kw=lg\" target=\"_self\">Ebay<\/a>\u00a0 was more than fifty cents.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While I&#8217;ve not crafted a citation for the coin, I have thought about what it provides evidence of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Boerner &amp; Troutfetter were in business together in Colby, Kansas.<\/li>\n<li>It doesn&#8217;t state that Troutfetter lived in Colby, Kansas, when the coin was used or that he ever actually lived in Colby. He probably did, but&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>It doesn&#8217;t mean that Troutfetter was even alive when the coin was made.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It&#8217;s still a neat little item to have, but it&#8217;s always worth thinking about what something tells us.<\/p>\n<p>And what it does not.<\/p>\n<p>Even if it is a fifty cent piece not worth fifty cents.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thanks to my\u00a0\u00a0Ebay\u00a0 purchase, my coin from Kansas arrived.
