It&#8217;s not even the initial letter where a different letter is more significant. In most sites that have unexact searches, vowels typically are ignored unless they are the first letter. The difficulty I had in finding the death entry for a Peter Verikios in Chicago\u00a0was a reminder to me that I&#8217;ve got to think about vowel droppings in spelling variants when using\u00a0<em>FamilySearch.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1958 size-full alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/searchingname.jpg\" alt=\"searchingname\" width=\"873\" height=\"625\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/searchingname.jpg 873w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/searchingname-300x215.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 873px) 100vw, 873px\" \/><br \/>\nIn summary, one would think that if I&#8217;ve got the search set up to be unexact that Verikios and Verikos would return the same hits.<\/p>\n<p>They don&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>Same thing is true for Goldenstein and Goldenstien which I learned some time ago.<\/p>\n<p>These comments only apply to\u00a0<em>FamilySearch.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Searching the Cook County, Illinois, death index on\u00a0FamilySearch reminded me that when searching with the &#8220;exact box&#8221; unchecked vowels sometimes matter.
