It&#8217;s easy to see at the very bottom of the image included with this post. When I encountered the record while looking for someone else, I thought it looked strange as I was fairly familiar with the Fechts of Hancock County, Illinois&#8217; Prairie Township and I did not remember a Harm living alone as an 18 year old.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s because he didn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>The actual census image for Harm indicated he was living in the household of Jacob Fecht as a hired man. But yet his &#8220;record&#8221; on <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.anrdoezrs.net\/click-865524-10470501-1449535196000?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ancestry.com%2Fsearch%2Fdb.aspx%3Fhtx%3DList%26dbid%3D6742\">Ancestry.com<\/a><\/em>\u00a0indicated he was alone in his household.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/harm-fecht-enumerationl.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2171\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2171\" src=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/harm-fecht-enumerationl.jpg\" alt=\"harm-fecht-enumerationl\" width=\"618\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/harm-fecht-enumerationl.jpg 618w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/harm-fecht-enumerationl-300x81.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I decided to search for an ancestor that I knew was living as a boarder with relatives in 1880, just to see. Sure enough Voke Goldenstien (actually Focke Goldenstein) is shown in his record entry as being the only individual in the household.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/vokegoldenstein-individual.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2174\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2174\" src=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/vokegoldenstein-individual.jpg\" alt=\"vokegoldenstein-individual\" width=\"395\" height=\"529\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/vokegoldenstein-individual.jpg 395w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/vokegoldenstein-individual-224x300.jpg 224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 395px) 100vw, 395px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sure enough when one views the census image, he is listed as a boarder in the household of Eme Aden. Sure enough the &#8220;record&#8221; screen for Michael Trautvetter showed his wife and children as living in his household. According to this screen only Trautvetters (Dratvetter according to the census enumeration) lived in the household. I knew that was not right as I&#8217;d seen the entry before and distinctly remembered Trautvetter having hired help.<\/p>\n<p>Sure enough he did. There are clearly two additional individuals living in the household: Friederich Richmeier and John [something or other]. Why those two names are not showing up on the other screen I am not certain.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/trautvetter-enumeration.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2170\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2170\" src=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/trautvetter-enumeration.jpg\" alt=\"trautvetter-enumeration\" width=\"692\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/trautvetter-enumeration.jpg 692w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/trautvetter-enumeration-300x174.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 692px) 100vw, 692px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>All screen shots were taken on 19 February 2016.<\/p>\n<p>I have not had time to see how this impacts the searching or if other census years that included relationships to head of household are also done in this fashion (remember 1880 is the first census year to show relationships). But I wish the households weren&#8217;t stripped of the boarders the way <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.anrdoezrs.net\/click-865524-10470501-1449535196000?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ancestry.com%2Fsearch%2Fdb.aspx%3Fhtx%3DList%26dbid%3D6742\">Ancestry.com<\/a><\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em>has chosen to remove them from the household.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The &#8220;view record&#8221; page for Harm Fecht on\u00a0Ancestry.com\u00a0indicates that he is the only individual living in his household in 1880.
