Trautvetter was not the only <a href=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/?p=3126\">man to desert his Civil War infantry unit in July of 1865<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to the &#8220;National Archives and Record Administration&#8217;s\u00a0Organization Index to Pension Files of Veterans Who Served Between 1861 and 1900,&#8221; (NARA microfilm publication T289&#8211;available with images on\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tkqlhce.com\/click-865524-10934994?url=https:\/\/www.fold3.com\/browse\/249\/hh_q9kMjO\">Fold3<\/a><\/em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tqlkg.com\/image-865524-10934994-1383146580000\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>\u00a0as &#8220;Civil War Pensions Index&#8221; or on <em>FamilySearch \u00a0<\/em>in text format only\u00a0as &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/familysearch.org\/search\/collection\/1471019\">United States Civil War and Later Pension Index, 1861-1917<\/a>&#8220;) there are no Civil War pensions for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>William Doerges<\/li>\n<li>Henry Doerges<\/li>\n<li>Adam Enders<\/li>\n<li>George A. Trautvetter<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Having seen<a href=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/?p=3090\"> George A. Trautvetter&#8217;s compiled military service record<\/a>, I know that he appealed his desertion discharge and that his appeal was denied. Just because the Doergeses and Enders did not receive a pension does not mean that their dishonorable discharge was not reversed on appeal. They could have appealed and either died before qualifying for a pension or for some reason never applied for one.<\/p>\n<p>That determination will require further research.<\/p>\n<p>Since the Doergeses and Enders apparently deserted with Trautvetter, I&#8217;m tempted to obtain their compiled military service record to see what information those files contain. At this point, I know nothing about them other than that they were Warsaw, Illinois, residents (at least by 1860) and that they were in the same unit with Trautvetter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In part III of this series we saw that George A.
