Trautvetter is one of those names.<\/p>\n<p>I was reviewing probate records for members of the Trautvetter family using the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kqzyfj.com\/click-865524-10470501-1404254934000?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ancestry.com%2Fsearch%2Fdb.aspx%3Fdbid%3D9048\">Illinois, Wills and Probate Records, 1772-1999<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0at\u00a0<em>Ancestry.com.\u00a0<\/em>Because the name gets spelled a variety of ways, I searched for troutvetter with the search slider set to &#8220;exact, sounds like and similar.&#8221; I obtained ten matches.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/troutvetter-illinois-probate.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3647\" src=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/troutvetter-illinois-probate.jpg\" alt=\"troutvetter-illinois-probate\" width=\"955\" height=\"444\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/troutvetter-illinois-probate.jpg 955w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/troutvetter-illinois-probate-300x139.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/troutvetter-illinois-probate-768x357.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 955px) 100vw, 955px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In reviewing those items (partially shown in the first image), I realized there were no results for the Michael Trautvetter who died in 1869. I knew he had a probate as I had used the records before. I knew they were online as I had used them at\u00a0<em>Ancestry.com<\/em> before. Why wasn&#8217;t my search locating them?<\/p>\n<p>I decided to search for troutfetter instead with the slider set to &#8220;exact, sounds like and similar.&#8221; Sure enough there were the entries for Adam and Michael Troutfetter.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/troutfetter-illinois-probate.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-3648\" src=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/troutfetter-illinois-probate.jpg\" alt=\"troutfetter-illinois-probate\" width=\"750\" height=\"346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/troutfetter-illinois-probate.jpg 995w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/troutfetter-illinois-probate-300x138.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/troutfetter-illinois-probate-768x354.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But the search apparently is not working correctly&#8211;or at least not the way I think it should. Troutfetter and Troutvetter do sound very much alike.<\/p>\n<p>Why doesn&#8217;t the &#8220;sounds like&#8221; setting bring them both up?
