Transcribers are supposed to transcribe records as they appear, not as they wish they would appear and not as they are &#8220;supposed&#8221; to appear. The directive is fairly clear. When the handwriting is easy to read, errors are not that hard to transcribe. When the handwriting is difficult to read, transcribing an error presents an addition layer of fog for the transcriber to navigate.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is compounded when the information being extracted is being put into a database with pre-populated fields from which the transcriber has to choose.<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s the dilemma that likely met the\u00a0<em>Ancestry.com<\/em> transcriber of the World War II Old Men&#8217;s Draft card for Henry William Trautvetter that appears in their &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kqzyfj.com\/click-865524-10470501?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ancestry.com%2Fsearch%2Fdb.aspx%3Fdbid%3D1002\">U.S., World War II Draft Registration Cards, 1942<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Henry was born in Hancock and Hancock is located in Tioga. That&#8217;s not a typographical error.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4274\" src=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/trautvetter-henry-william-ww2.jpg\" alt=\"trautvetter-henry-william-ww2\" width=\"709\" height=\"486\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/trautvetter-henry-william-ww2.jpg 709w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/trautvetter-henry-william-ww2-300x206.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The printing on the draft card is clear for Trautvetter&#8217;s\u00a0place of birth:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Town or county: Hancock<\/li>\n<li>State or country: Tioga<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is no doubt what the card says.<\/p>\n<p>Trautvetter&#8217;s card indicated he was living in Lima Township, Adams County, Illinois, \u00a0when he registered in April of 1942. The person who would &#8220;always&#8230;know your address&#8221; lived in Tioga (no stated listed) suggesting it&#8217;s near where Trautvetter lived at the time of the registration. \u00a0Tioga is also where Trautvetter was born.<\/p>\n<p><em>Ancestry.com<\/em>&#8216;s indexer apparently decided that this Hancock in the state of Tioga was actually Hancock in the state of New York. That is how it appears in the database\u00a0<em>Ancestry.com<\/em> made to index these cards.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4277\" src=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/trautvetter-henry-william-ww2draft-results.jpg\" alt=\"trautvetter-henry-william-ww2draft-results\" width=\"607\" height=\"441\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/trautvetter-henry-william-ww2draft-results.jpg 607w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/trautvetter-henry-william-ww2draft-results-300x218.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 607px) 100vw, 607px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Part of the problem is that to facilitate the indexing of these records to streamline the search process,\u00a0<em>Ancestry.com<\/em> has standardized the place names that can be used. There is no state of Tioga and never has been a state of Tioga. Because of this, it does not appear on\u00a0<em>Ancestry.com<\/em>&#8216;s list of states. \u00a0During the indexing process, someone decided that Hancock in the state of Tioga was actually a reference to Hancock in the state of New York.<\/p>\n<p>The database entries at\u00a0<em>Ancestry.com\u00a0<\/em>are not exactly transcriptions&#8211;particularly where the place names are concerned. In some cases, they are standardizations made to facilitate search.<\/p>\n<p>And there&#8217;s a difference between a standardization and a transcription&#8211;just like there is a difference between Illinois and New York.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong><em><strong>:\u00a0<\/strong>FamilySearch<\/em> also has a <a href=\"https:\/\/familysearch.org\/search\/image\/index#uri=https%3A%2F%2Ffamilysearch.org%2Frecapi%2Fsord%2Fcollection%2F1339071%2Fwaypoints\">database of these cards<\/a>, but as of this writing the\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kqzyfj.com\/click-865524-10470501?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ancestry.com%2Fsearch%2Fdb.aspx%3Fdbid%3D1002\">Ancestry.com<\/a><\/em> database is more complete than the <a href=\"https:\/\/familysearch.org\/search\/image\/index#uri=https%3A%2F%2Ffamilysearch.org%2Frecapi%2Fsord%2Fcollection%2F1339071%2Fwaypoints\">one at\u00a0<\/a><em>FamilySearch.\u00a0<\/em>The one at \u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kqzyfj.com\/click-865524-10470501?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ancestry.com%2Fsearch%2Fdb.aspx%3Fdbid%3D1002\">Ancestry.com<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is also searchable as well. The images <a href=\"https:\/\/familysearch.org\/search\/image\/index#uri=https%3A%2F%2Ffamilysearch.org%2Frecapi%2Fsord%2Fcollection%2F1339071%2Fwaypoints\">at\u00a0<\/a><em>FamilySearch\u00a0<\/em>are\u00a0alphabetical by state.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Second note:\u00a0<\/strong>Trautvetter is a brother to George Adolph Trautvetter (1869-1934) my great-grandfather.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Records with clear errors present challenges to transcribers.
