{"id":4903,"date":"2017-06-13T04:42:06","date_gmt":"2017-06-13T04:42:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/?p=4903"},"modified":"2017-06-14T23:32:44","modified_gmt":"2017-06-14T23:32:44","slug":"my-ancestrydna-results-are-in-and-im-surprised","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/?p=4903","title":{"rendered":"My AncestryDNA Results Are In and I&#8217;m Surprised"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tkqlhce.com\/click-865524-10508559\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4904\" src=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/ancestry-com-dna.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"547\" height=\"477\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/ancestry-com-dna.jpg 600w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/ancestry-com-dna-300x262.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 547px) 100vw, 547px\" \/><\/a>I was surprised just a little with my\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tkqlhce.com\/click-865524-10508559\"><em>Ancestry.com<\/em><\/a> DNA test results which came in over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Using my third great-grandparents as a point of reference (simply because I&#8217;m not going to use my 10th great-grandparents to create the percentages for this post), my genealogical ancestry is approximately:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>50% Ostfriesen (my maternal side)&#8211;which qualifies as Europe West using\u00a0<em>Ancestry.com<\/em> terms.<\/li>\n<li>12.5% Irish (my great-grandfather Neill)<\/li>\n<li>12.5% German (my great-grandfather Trautvetter)&#8211;which qualifies as Europe West using\u00a0<em>Ancestry.com\u00a0<\/em> terms.<\/li>\n<li>25% not known precisely (my great-grandmothers Neill and Trautvetter who have significant ancestry from Great Britain (at least half) with probably a dash of German thrown into the mix).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Based upon my genealogical tree (and not taking into account migrations), I should have been (roughly):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>at least 12.5% Irish<\/li>\n<li>at least 62.5% Europe West<\/li>\n<li>at least 12.5% Great Britian<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Wow.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;thousands of years ago Ethnicity Estimate&#8221; doesn&#8217;t really help with my more recent research problems. As we will see in future posts, there were other reasons I had for taking the test.<\/p>\n<p>The 12% Scandinavian surprised me as did the 4% Irish. My speculation is that there is some ancient Scandinavian lineage in my Ostfriesian lines and that my Irish ancestors (half of whom are from Northern Ireland) weren&#8217;t really Irish at all when pushed back several generations. I&#8217;ve got an idea why my Great Britain percentage is so high as well which we will explore in a future post. Ancient migrations are interesting, but don&#8217;t help me solve problems from 1850<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve got some more immediate interesting results from my test that we will discuss in a future post.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was surprised just a little with my\u00a0Ancestry.com DNA test results which came in over the weekend.
