It&#8217;s been on the <em>Ancestry.com\u00a0<\/em>site for some time.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s no indication of how the database has been updated or how significant that change is.<\/p>\n<p>The database is a wonderful source for 20th century United States research, but there are a few points to keep in mind:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>it does not include everyone in the United States who had a Social Security Number<\/li>\n<li>place names may have been spelled irregularly-Barthage, Illinois, for Carthage, Illinois, is one easy example. These names most likely are not tagged in such a way as to be found on a county based search using the county in which Carthage is located.<\/li>\n<li>place names can be truncated, merely chopping off some of the last characters&#8211;the data received from the Social Security Administration was computerized data some of which was created when truncation of names was necessary\n<p><div id=\"attachment_5207\" style=\"width: 402px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.anrdoezrs.net\/click-865524-10470501?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ancestry.com%2Fsearch%2Fdb.aspx%3Fdbid%3D60901\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5207\" class=\"wp-image-5207\" src=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ssa-database-searchfor-ancestrycom-300x258.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"392\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ssa-database-searchfor-ancestrycom-300x258.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ssa-database-searchfor-ancestrycom.jpg 705w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 392px) 100vw, 392px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5207\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Search box for &#8220;U.S., Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007&#8221;<\/p><\/div><\/li>\n<li>some incorrect or non-standard place names are tagged to the correct locations and will come up on search results that include\u00a0the geographic reference&#8211;others will not. My grandmother&#8217;s place of birth is listed in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.anrdoezrs.net\/click-865524-10470501?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ancestry.com%2Fsearch%2Fdb.aspx%3Fdbid%3D60901\">U.S., Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007<\/a>\u00a0as &#8220;Tioga,Walker,Illinois.&#8221; This is a reference to Tioga in Walker Township in Hancock County, Illinois. Fortunately it is returned as a hit when a search for her name and a place of birth in Hancock County, Illinois, is conducted.<\/li>\n<li>names may be spelled in unusual ways&#8211;sometimes they were spelled that way on the application and some times the handwritten application for a number was difficult to read<\/li>\n<li>be creative when using the search box<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ancestry.com is indicating that &#8220;U.S., Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007&#8221; has been updated as of today.
