I had my list of alternate spellings and renderings. Frautvetter is a reasonable transcription variation and it was on my search list.<\/p>\n<p>Then I got confused.<\/p>\n<p>Frautvetter and Frautfetter (with the Soundex option on) did not return the same results. Unless I am missing something, they should.<\/p>\n<h3>Frautfetter<\/h3>\n<p>A screen shot of my search box follows. The &#8220;match all terms exactly&#8221; box is checked. That does\u00a0<em>not<\/em> mean to only include the spelling as typed in the box. It means do exactly what is typed in the box\u00a0<em>and<\/em> what is checked under that box.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6266\" src=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/1860-trautvetter-search2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"618\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/1860-trautvetter-search2.jpg 618w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/1860-trautvetter-search2-300x165.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>No results were obtained for my search:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6264\" src=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/1860-trautfetter-search-results.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/1860-trautfetter-search-results.jpg 960w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/1860-trautfetter-search-results-300x140.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/1860-trautfetter-search-results-768x359.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Frautvetter<\/h2>\n<p>All that was done was a changing of the &#8220;f&#8221; in Frautfetter to a &#8220;v&#8221; for my next search. That&#8217;s it. Frautvetter and Frautfetter are soundex equivalent (F631) [<a href=\"https:\/\/stevemorse.org\/census\/soundex.html\">check it yourself<\/a>]. No other box was changed. Since Frautvetter and Frautfetter are soundex equivalent, they should return the same results.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6267\" src=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/1860-trautvetter-search1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"627\" height=\"347\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/1860-trautvetter-search1.jpg 627w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/1860-trautvetter-search1-300x166.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 627px) 100vw, 627px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Except they don&#8217;t. This time I got results. Freidbecker and Freidthoff are both Soundex equivalent to each other (F631) and to Frautvetter.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6265\" src=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/1860-trautvetter-search-results.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"968\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/1860-trautvetter-search-results.jpg 968w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/1860-trautvetter-search-results-300x138.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/1860-trautvetter-search-results-768x354.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 968px) 100vw, 968px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But why don&#8217;t Frautvetter and Frautfetter return the same results when the &#8220;Exact, sounds like, similar, and Soundex&#8221; option is checked? The search for Frautvetter did return soundex equivalents to that name&#8211;there were no Frautvetters in the index. Since Frautfetter is the soundex equivalent of Frautvetter\u00a0 and the soundex option was turned on, the results should be the same?<\/p>\n<p>Or what am I not understanding?
