It tends to be better than the &#8220;hints and leaves&#8221; in general&#8211;largely because these &#8220;Shared Ancestor Hints&#8221; come from your DNA matches. That does not mean they\u00a0<em>have<\/em> to be correct and <em>will<\/em> be correct. No. That&#8217;s not the way it works. It&#8217;s just that the trees that aren&#8217;t attached to DNA results are not considered for these &#8220;Shared Ancestor Hints.&#8221; These hints are being pulled from people with whom you share a DNA connection.\u00a0 That whittles down the potential matches.<\/p>\n<p>That does not mean they are perfect. The coding used to generate these matches still relies on &#8220;same name&#8221; is &#8220;same person&#8221; theory. For those of us who have several ancestors with similar sounding names, that makes it easy for \u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tkqlhce.com\/click-865524-13080235\">Ancestry.com<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>to make some weird connections.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is that I know there are people who assume these &#8220;shared Ancestor Hints&#8221; must be correct because they are only pulled from your DNA matches. That&#8217;s not true.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tkqlhce.com\/click-865524-13080235\">Ancestry.com<\/a><\/em> gave me a shared ancestor hint coming from my 7th great-grandmother, Antje Janssen.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6275\" src=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/sharedhint1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1319\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/sharedhint1.jpg 1319w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/sharedhint1-300x90.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/sharedhint1-768x231.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/sharedhint1-1024x308.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1319px) 100vw, 1319px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;Shared Hint&#8221; suggested that Antje had sons Gerhardus Geerds and John Gerdes Loschen. Apparently the tree thought she was married twice.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>John Gerdes Loschen<\/strong><\/span>, according to the descendant was born in 1890 in Illinois. That John had a mother Antje Janssen, born in 1860 and died in 1945.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6273\" src=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/sharedhint3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1104\" height=\"767\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/sharedhint3.jpg 1104w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/sharedhint3-300x208.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/sharedhint3-768x534.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/sharedhint3-1024x711.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1104px) 100vw, 1104px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Gerhardus Geerds<\/span><\/strong>, another son of the &#8220;same&#8221; Antje Janssen was born in 1726 in Germany and also had a mother named Antje Janssen&#8211;I just don&#8217;t have a birth date for her. That&#8217;s partially because if I don&#8217;t have information that suggests a date of birth, I usually do not even enter in an approximate one. One would think that the programmers at \u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tkqlhce.com\/click-865524-13080235\">Ancestry.com<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(who apparently have the wherewithal to program the DNA analysis) would be able to check against children born over 150 years apart to the same mother.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6274\" src=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/sharedhint2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1076\" height=\"794\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/sharedhint2.jpg 1076w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/sharedhint2-300x221.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/sharedhint2-768x567.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/sharedhint2-1024x756.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1076px) 100vw, 1076px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The relationship between the other submitter and myself was also suggested. I&#8217;ve removed the name of the submitter and his father, but it indicated that we were second cousins six times removed. That is a big stretch and would mean that my 6th great-grandfather and the grandfather of another DNA submitter were brothers.
