It&#8217;s not because they are perfect sources (they aren&#8217;t) or because they will answer every question (they won&#8217;t). But they can be a wonderful genealogical resource for a variety of reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>they can be helpful in &#8220;burned counties&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>they can facilitate the finding of some court cases<\/li>\n<li>they may mention details not listed in a court case<\/li>\n<li>different newspapers may give a different spin on the same event<\/li>\n<li>ethnic or religious newspapers may provide details not given in other publications<\/li>\n<li>gossip columns in small-town newspapers can often flesh out details about an individual&#8217;s life<\/li>\n<li>newspaper advertisements can give information on a relative&#8217;s business activity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;ve pre-ordered Jim Beidler&#8217;s\u00a0\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1440350620\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1440350620&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=gentipoftheda-20&amp;linkId=bd50a45b69cca0e059926c6953f17a73\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Family Tree Historical Newspapers Guide: How to Find Your Ancestors in Archived Newspapers<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=gentipoftheda-20&amp;l=am2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1440350620\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>.<\/em> Based on <a href=\"http:\/\/genealogytipoftheday.com\/index.php\/books-on-my-shelf\/\">his German books<\/a>, I&#8217;m certain to pick up a few good suggestions, ideas, and reminders. Not all newspapers are online (most are on microfilm&#8211;locating them is the challenge), some are online for free, and some are online in fee-based databases.
