{"id":901,"date":"2015-08-22T02:36:16","date_gmt":"2015-08-22T02:36:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/?p=901"},"modified":"2015-08-22T02:36:16","modified_gmt":"2015-08-22T02:36:16","slug":"citing-those-incomplete-city-directories-on-ancestry-com","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/?p=901","title":{"rendered":"Citing Those Incomplete City Directories on Ancestry.com"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our recent post, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/?p=889\">In the Beginning Was Page 50<\/a>,&#8221; got me to thinking:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>How would I cite an entry from that directory?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There is an entry for my uncle that directory on what is referred to as\u00a0<em>Ancestry.com<\/em>&#8216;s image 55 out of 633:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/1955-uncle-Alvin.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-902\" src=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/1955-uncle-Alvin-300x235.jpg\" alt=\"1955-uncle-Alvin\" width=\"300\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/1955-uncle-Alvin-300x235.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/1955-uncle-Alvin.jpg 586w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The image indicated it was page 45 of the actual book.\u00a0<em>Ancestry.com<\/em> indicated it was from the 1955 Peoria [Illinois] City Directory. There are entries for my uncle on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>book page 45,\u00a0<em>Ancestry.com\u00a0<\/em>image 55 (above image)<\/li>\n<li>book page 721,\u00a0<em>Ancestry.com<\/em> image 450&#8211;this is the apparent residential entry for Alvin Ufkes which includes the entry &#8220;Ufkes, Alvin J. (Rose M.; Heyle Royster &amp; Velke) h5422 Isabell av (RT)&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Ancestry.com<\/em>&#8216;s search indicated that there were three entries for an Alvin Ufkes in the 1955 Peoria directory, but these were the only two located.<\/p>\n<h3>How to Cite?<\/h3>\n<p>Crafting a citation for these two entries is the problem.<\/p>\n<p>The title page with author, date, and other biographical information appears to be missing from\u00a0<em>Ancestry.com<\/em>&#8216;s publication of this data. My citation will need to indicate that I&#8217;m using a database on\u00a0<em>Ancestry.com<\/em> that has published under the title of &#8220;Peoria Illinois 1955 directory.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Typically when one cites digital renderings of published materials, there is bibliographic information regarding the &#8220;original&#8221; date \u00a0and place of publication along with information regarding the online location of the reproduced version of the material. Usually that online publication includes a copy of the title page and other &#8220;original&#8221; publication information.<\/p>\n<p>But that&#8217;s not there in this case.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll have a later post with a discussion of the citation format for this particular item.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our recent post, &#8220;In the Beginning Was Page 50,&#8221; got me to thinking: How would I cite an entry from that directory?
