{"id":978,"date":"2015-09-01T16:29:09","date_gmt":"2015-09-01T16:29:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/?p=978"},"modified":"2015-09-01T16:29:09","modified_gmt":"2015-09-01T16:29:09","slug":"ocr-confusion-damages-the-demosses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/?p=978","title":{"rendered":"OCR Confusion Damages the DeMosses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I realize that OCR searches are problematic, but this seems a little bit more problematic than usual.<\/p>\n<p>I searched for &#8220;Demoss&#8221; in the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kqzyfj.com\/click-865524-10470501-1404254934000?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ancestry.com%2Fsearch%2Fdb.aspx%3Fdbid%3D6889\">Maryland Archives, 1658-1783<\/a>&#8221; with the hopes of finding something on my family from that state.<\/p>\n<p>The search brought up 1484 hits as shown in the image below. Many of these were for non-Demoss names or words. Particularly &#8220;dammages&#8221; and &#8220;damages.&#8221; There were lots of damages in my results.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/no-dammages-but-demosses.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-979\" src=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/no-dammages-but-demosses.jpg\" alt=\"no-dammages-but-demosses\" width=\"977\" height=\"634\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/no-dammages-but-demosses.jpg 977w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/no-dammages-but-demosses-300x195.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 977px) 100vw, 977px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nSo I decided to flip it around and search for damages. I wasn&#8217;t certain how many hits I would get, but I expected a number reasonably similar to 1484&#8211;different but reasonably close.<\/p>\n<p>There were no results for dammages as last name. I also obtained no results when I searched for that word as a keyword as well. No damages and no results.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/no-dammages.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-980\" src=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/no-dammages.jpg\" alt=\"no-dammages\" width=\"1005\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/no-dammages.jpg 1005w, https:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/no-dammages-300x76.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1005px) 100vw, 1005px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nIt&#8217;s been a while since I&#8217;ve had any advanced coursework in number theory or algebra, but I&#8217;m pretty certain that 0 is not the same as 1484. In algebra, 0 is particularly interesting and has a variety of special properties.<\/p>\n<p>Here 0 is just frustrating.<\/p>\n<p>And confusing.<\/p>\n<p>There are 0 results for &#8220;dammages&#8221; as a last name and 0 results for &#8220;dammages&#8221; as a keyword.<\/p>\n<p>There are 0 results for &#8220;damage&#8221; as a last name and 367 results for &#8220;damage&#8221; as a keyword.<\/p>\n<p>All search results were obtained between 11:00 am and 11:25 am central time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I realize that OCR searches are problematic, but this seems a little bit more problematic than usual.
