There have been rumors that the “Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007″ at Ancestry.com is a database “in progress.” An Ancestry.com source “in the know” i
ndicated that this is not the case. The only potential updates I can see being made are additional names being entered that are for individuals who die after 2007 as time moves forward.
I was also unable to get any “fix” on how someone gets in the the “Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007″ at Ancestry.com either.

I have my father’s original social security card, and he died in 2005. He is not in this index, and my mother is not either as well as her father. They both died in the 1960s, Many of these people are in the Death Index. None of them were federal employees or railroad employees.

Is Ancestry.com the only place to access the Social Security Applications and Claims Index? It seems to me this should be public information and I don’t want to pay Ancestry.com. My grandparents immigrated from Russia in the early 1900s so I have no American roots to trace. How can I access this database? Thanks.

It looks like it. Wish I had a better answer for you. There are probably some research groups on Facebook where people who do limited lookups in it for you.
