Since restarting Casefile Clues, I’ve been reminded of the importance of writing in genealogy. Even if the only person you are writing for is yourself, putting your thoughts together and “making your case” is one of the best ways to refine your research, catch errors in your reasoning, and to notice oversights.

The ideal audience is someone who is not familiar with the family or the person being discussed. Assumptions should be explained. Citations should be complete.

But it’s not just writing up your genealogy proofs that should be done. The genealogist should write up their own memories and stories as well. Grammar does not have to be perfect.

The important thing is that it get done. What’s stopping you?
