County boundaries are occasionally in flux and sometimes counties come and counties go.
That’s what happened with Marquette County, Illinois.
This 1847 map of western Illinois will look a little strange to those not aware of 1840 era history of Adams County. In 1843 Marquette County was cut out of the eastern part of the state. In 1847 Marquette, with some additional territory from Adams, was used to create Highland County. Highland County never came to fruition either and the territory reverted back to Adams County.
Had Highland come to fruition my mother’s Adams County ancestors wouldn’t have been Adams County ancestors at all. They would have been Highland County ancestors.
And there’s undoubtedly other references in various records and publications to Marquette and Highland Counties in Illinois during the 1840s. They are all referring to territory now in Adams County.

Many of your posts are very interesting and I want to thank you. Therefore, I recently paid the subscription of $5.
I would prefer the once a week update instead of receiving daily ones AND once a week ones. Is this possible?
If it isn’t possible, I understand. Thank you very much,
