Pension updates for Civil War veterans were regularly published in certain newspapers throughout the United States. In some cases these names may have been published a significant distance from where the individual lived.

This item from January of 1890 comes from an Indianapolis newspaper and contains a list of Illinois and Indiana residents who had recent action taken on their pensions. riley-rampley-pension-newspaper

The only detail that was published along with their name was their residence. I’m not completely certain what the purpose of publication was, so I’m not going to speculate. The illustration includes a reference to Riley Rampley of Hickory Ridge, Illinois–quite a distance from Indianapolis.

But…it’s a good reminder that a person’s name could be mentioned a distance from where they lived.

The only reason I located this item was because I was searching for some of Riley’s Rampley cousins who happened to live in Indiana.
