Nancy Jane (Newman) Rampley was born in Rush County, Indiana, in 1846 and died in West Point, Hancock County, Illinois, in 1923. She married Riley Rampley in Hancock County, Illinois, in 1867.
From Nancy Jane, I learned:
- Sometimes middle names and spellings really do matter. Nancy’s first cousin, named Nancy Elizabeth Newman, married a brother of Nancy’s husband. They were both Nancy Rampley. Riley’s wife was Nancy J. Rampley. Her cousin was Nancie E. Rampley. It didn’t help that they lived in the same town.
- Keep trying. Nancy’s Civil War widow’s pension application was denied repeatedly until a special examiner had to be sent to interview her.
- Be careful who you hire for your hired man. He may end up marrying one of your daughters.
My ancestor table can be viewed on my site. Nancy is my great-great-grandmother.
