It was a good hypothesis.Page001

Unfortunately it does not appear to have been true.

I was hoping that the bondsman on the 1865 St. John, New Brunswick, marriage of Samuel Neill and Annie Murphy had some connection to the couple other than “just knowing them.”

A search of the databases on the New Brunswick Provincial Archives website seems to indicate that an Edward Durbin:

  • married Jane Robinson in St. John in 1858
  • died in 1890 in St. John at the almshouse–at native of Manchester, England

The 1871 Census for New Brunswick (household of Edward Durbin, New Brunswick, St. John, Queen Ward, district 174, division 2, p. 106) indicated that Jane Durbin was born in Ireland approximately in 1839.  Edward Durbin is indicated being a native of England. Jane needed to be a part of this research equation once it was discovered that Edward Durbin was married before the Neills were married.

While the research was not comprehensive, it does not appear that Edward Durbin had any connection to the family in Ireland. His wife Jane was Irish, but her maiden name was Robinson and not Murphy.

I will be re-evaluating to see if I need to followup on Jane.
